Move More Sport
The ambition is to have an inclusive, city-wide sport offer that enables everyone in Sheffield to experience the joy and benefit of sport. Sport means many different things to different people, it can include participation in formal or informal sport, spectating, volunteering or being part of the extensive sport workforce.
Sport is a powerful force for good, it brings people together, connects communities, instils important values and inspires people. Sheffield has a proud heritage as a City of Sport and sport plays an important role across our schools, parks, venues and facilities.
The Move More Sport Groups mission is to continue to build on Sheffield’s reputation and legacy as the City of Sport; providing a platform which supports people in sport and for those who want to try sport.
The group aims to do this by bringing together key sports organisations, bodies and people in the city to;
Work together to maximise the cities resources and capacity including; events, funding, and capital developments
Provide support where it is needed the most including; Clubs, NGB’s, Communities, and Volunteers
Celebrate the success of Sport in Sheffield and promote the role that sport can play in the Move More agenda

Claire Fretwell - Community Engagement Manager at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park
Claire works with schools, community groups and organisations to promote the Move More message in both the local area and across Sheffield. Part of Claire’s role is to bring events and activities to the Park that will encourage the local community to increase physical activity levels. She led the set-up of the Park’s junior parkrun in 2019 and is currently working on proposals for an outdoor exercise and activity space in the centre of the Park.
David Bly - Sheffield City Trust
I LOVE the way that movement and sport can be used in so many ways to positively engage people and create friendly environments for people to be involved in. I pride myself on positively impacting people’s opportunity to Move More, especially the future of our city through school children.
David Knapton - Participation Sport Development Coordinator at Sheffield Hallam University
I work across the University to get more students and staff involved in sport and physical activity predominantly through our social sport and sport leagues programmes. There are so many diverse opportunities for people in Sheffield to be involved in sport and physical activity which make it such a great place to work and develop peoples experiences.
Gary Clifton - Head of Major Events at Sheffield City Council
I’ve worked in the Major Sport Events team since 1993 and became the head of the City’s Major Events Team in late 2012. Looking ahead aver the next 2 years in Sheffield we are looking forward to working with partners on the Rugby League World Cup and UEFA Women’s European Football in what I am sure will present short and long term physical activity legacy benefits for the people of Sheffield.
Kate Cox - Head of Physical Activity and Sport at Sheffield Hallam University
I'm the Head of Physical Activity and Sport at Sheffield Hallam University. I'm responsible for overseeing a range of facilities, programmes and services for our students, staff and the local community.
Seeing the impact that sport and physical activity can have on people is what really makes me incredibly passionate about the 'Move More' message and just how important it is to all our lives.
Nisha Lall - South Yorkshire Dance Hub (Hub Coordinator) and Chance To Dance Festival (Festival Coordinator)
South Yorkshire Dance Hub promotes access to dance participation and performance in South Yorkshire to ensure more children, young people, adults and older people have access to quality dance provision.
Chance To Dance organises the annual outdoor community dance festival in Sheffield, celebrating the wide diversity of cultures and types of dance available in Sheffield for all ages.
Dance like other sports activities provide physical, social, mental and wellbeing benefits. Dance is very popular within the Sheffield community and a great alternative form of activity to traditional sports. We hope we can support the dance community and events to grow in Sheffield, aswell as supporting sporting events and active projects taking place in Sheffield.
Kendle Hardisty - Development Officer at Yorkshire Sport Foundation
I work for Yorkshire Sport Foundation as the Development Officer for Sheffield and Barnsley. We believe in the power of sport and physical activity to change people’s lives. Our vision is to create a vibrant, healthy and prosperous Yorkshire through sport, supporting the work of local, regional and national organisations.
